What makes it interesting?
This project reduced the volume of flood water that flows into Tulare Lake bed, located at the confluence of many streams in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. During wet years, the lake bottom lands are flooded and cannot be farmed.

The building of the CVC/Calloway Canal Intertie, BNSF Railroad Crossing included construction of double-barrel 144-inch tunnels underneath a pair of Class 1 BNSF Railroad tracks using an open-faced, shielded tunnel boring machine. Beam-and-plate shoring systems were utilized, designed, and installed by Nicholas. The running sand ground conditions were stabilized by injecting a neat cement solution from the surface to stabilize the tunnel heading. Nicholas also had to suspend numerous hot oil lines running pressures between 400 and 600 pounds per square inch and temperatures up to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. The project was a complete success and no lost-time injuries incurred.
