This project was complex because the work was completed in a dense urban area. Posillico used “Ground Freezing” technology to eliminate the need for internal bracing or tie backs to support excavation.
How HCSS Software assisted with this project
HeavyBid made it possible to efficiently compare the cost of ground freeze soil support method versus multiple, more traditional, support-of-excavation designs. By comparing multiple estimates, Posillico was able to comfortably choose the most cost-effective methods for completing the project. HeavyBid reports allowed Posillico to clearly show cost savings to the client, which ultimately helped them become the successful bidder.
The Hoboken Block 110 Site Remediation project consisted of installing steel sheet pile demarcation wall around the perimeter of a former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) site, constructing a soil freeze support of excavation wall, and erecting a negative pressure enclosure.
The project also involved site dewatering and excavation and disposal of approximately 100,000 tons of impacted hazardous and non-hazardous soil to a depth of 28 feet below grade, as well as relocation of the 200-foot by 130-foot negative pressure enclosure using a crane.
Posillico used “Ground Freezing” technology, an innovative approach to the support of excavation, and all excavation was performed under a negative-pressure enclosure. The excavation was done to a depth of 28 feet below grade, approximately 24 feet below the water table. With the enhanced ground water cuttoff of the frozen soil wall, dewatering was greatly reduced. By carefully selecting the size and type of enclosure, Posillico excavated all of the soil from within the negative pressure enclosure, minimizing impacts to the community.
