What makes it interesting?
AAA was up against two other bidders and won the project by staying under the engineer’s budget and coming in roughly 15 percent below the other two bidders.
How HCSS Software assisted with this project
HeavyBid helped AAA Asphalt Paving maintain an organized estimating structure, which allowed for a successful project.
AAA Asphalt Paving has been an HCSS user for more than seven years, estimating projects from $2,000 to $10 million. Heavy Bid software has played a huge part in the company’s growth over the last seven-plus years. AAA has been able to maintain an organized estimating structure, which has led them into success for project management.
All of AAA’s projects are diverse, which makes them very interesting. The Harris County Precinct 3 Hockley Soap Box Derby Track located in Hockley, Texas, was one of those projects. The scope of work included site preparation, drainage improvements, asphalt/concrete paving, metal flex beam guardrail, concrete structures, site restoration, and storm water pollution controls. The estimate consisted of approximately eight different material suppliers and two subcontractors. The raceway hill was made of lime fly ash stabilized subgrade, 8 inches of crushed aggregate base course, and 1.5 inches of asphalt surface course.
The Soap Box Derby is an activity for children to race down a sloped hill using non-motorized box cars. The Soap Box Derby is an American youth tradition that can trace its roots to the early 1930’s from Myron Scott, a newspaper man from Dayton, Ohio. The program is geared towards teaching youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship and the spirit of competition. The slope is a two-lane paved raceway approximately the length of a football field. In the early years, the box cars were made of orange wood crates, sheet tin, wagon and baby buggy wheels. The box cars have become a little more sophisticated, although the idea is the same: you win using gravity.
The project was a success, and upon project completion AAA Asphalt Paving built and donated two box cars to the Harris County, Precinct 3 Hockley Soap Box Derby Track.
