Pebble Beach – Undergrounding of Overhead Utilities
What makes it interesting?
Pebble Beach is one of the premier golf locations in the world and has been host to countless high profile golf tournaments and the fabled Concours de Elegance annual car show. This project is will be a key part of making this beautiful resort even more desirable as it eliminates the overhead utilities from view and creates a more reliable system that is not threatened by storms or falling branches.
How HCSS Software assisted with this project
Estimating this project was a big challenge due to varied site conditions and large variety of trench configurations. Because this was a joint trench project, the bid required coordinating the trench and vault requirements for each utility operator. In addition, the area of work was extremely varied, including busy roadways, narrow residential streets, a dirt access road, and adjacent the main reservoir pump station.
Lewis and Tibbitts’ estimators relied on HeavyBid to accurately track and estimate every bid item in order to have the most competitive number possible. We are convinced that HeavyBid greatly assisted in compiling and winning this complicated bid.
This project also served as a turning point for Lewis and Tibbitts as this was the pilot project for using HeavyJob in our company. At the beginning of this project, we had recently acquired a HeavyJob license and brought out a trainer from HCSS to help us get started. The trainer set up HeavyJob to track this project with imported data from HeavyBid and entering our company specific labor, equipment, and production codes. The assistant project manager tracked this project using HeavyJob throughout the project duration. This was the first step towards rolling out HeavyJob at our company and served as a great pilot job and learning experience.
This experience taught us to use the many powerful tools in HeavyJob and enable us to track later jobs more accurately. As a result, we are now tracking several jobs on a daily basis with information being entered by field foremen on HCSS enabled iPads. Since the beginning with the Pebble Beach project, HeavyJob is steadily becoming a critical part of how Lewis and Tibbitts tracks our projects.
Project Description:
Lewis and Tibbitts was the general contractor for Phase 1 of the Undergrounding of Overhead Utilities Project at Pebble Beach. This was the first phase of a larger ambitious project to bring all of the utilities underground in Pebble Beach. Lewis and Tibbitts worked closely with the Pebble Beach Community Services District to make this project a success.
Work was coordinated with the Pebble Beach Company, PG&E, AT&T, and Comcast. The project scope included over 11,000 feet of conduit installed for the three utilities, over 80 vaults and pull-boxes, and a complete repaving of a half-mile section of road. With a highly skilled work force and plugged-in management team, Lewis and Tibbitts has the expertise and experience to complete a project of this magnitude.
Maintaining positive relationships was a huge priority for Lewis and Tibbitts throughout the entire project. They worked closely with everyone involved in the project beginning with the client and the project engineer as well as suppliers and subcontractors, Pebble Beach residents, the Pebble Beach Company, Monterey Peninsula Country Club, City of Pacific Grove, and each utility company involved in the project. This dedication has paid off in a big way as Lewis and Tibbets was able to complete the project ahead of schedule and under budget for the client. This project was featured in several local papers that gave a very favorable view of this project and the company. In addition, valuable relationships were established with many contacts that have already resulted in more work opportunities for Lewis and Tibbitts.
